Questions before applying? 785-966-XXXX Role: The Youth Mental Health Counselor delivers community-based counseling and casework to youth and families, evaluating mental health through interviews or observations. Responsibilities involve creating collaborative treatment plans, implementing interventions, and making referrals. Crisis intervention may be necessary for patients at risk. Monitoring treatment progress and maintaining written records of patient interactions are essential. Additionally, the Counselor contributes to Community Education, Awareness, and Advocacy efforts. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Minimum Requirements: Driving: Must have a valid Kansas driver's license and be insurable with the Nation's insurance Experience: Six months previous experience assisting youth and or providing counseling services. Education: Master's degree in Social Work or other therapeutic field with ability to be licensed within 6 months. Interpersonal Skills: A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others. Knowledge: Therapeutic Techniques: Proficiency in various therapeutic techniques tailored to the developmental needs of adolescents, such as play therapy, art therapy, or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Assessment and Diagnosis: Skilled in assessing and diagnosing mental health conditions specific to youth, using age-appropriate assessment tools and clinical interviews. Understanding of Developmental Stages: Knowledge of developmental psychology to understand the unique challenges and needs of youth at different stages of development. Trauma-Informed Care: Ability to recognize signs of trauma and provide trauma-informed interventions to support healing and recovery. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Knowledge of community resources available for social, medical, and economic assistance. Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as email, spreadsheets, promotional material, word processing, managing files and records, and workplace terminology. Knowledge of the dynamics of the American Indian people: origins and history, ethnicity, culture, migrations, and societal influences. Knowledge of business principles involved in budgeting, resource allocation, and grant requirements. Skills: Crisis Intervention: Capability to handle crisis situations and provide immediate support and intervention when necessary. Collaboration with Families and Schools: Working collaboratively with parents, guardians, teachers, and other professionals involved in the youth's life to provide comprehensive care and support. Cultural Competence: Sensitivity to cultural differences and awareness of how cultural backgrounds may influence the mental health of young individuals. Boundaries and Ethics: Adherence to ethical guidelines and maintaining appropriate boundaries while providing support and guidance to youth. Self-awareness and Self-care: Awareness of personal biases and limitations and practicing self-care to prevent burnout and maintain emotional well-being while working with youth. Continual Professional Development: Commitment to staying updated on the latest research, therapies, and best practices in youth mental health counseling through ongoing education and training. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Speaking - Talking to others to convey information effectively. Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Social Perceptiveness - Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Judgment & Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. Service Orientation - Actively looking for ways to help people. Instructing - Teaching others how to do something. Learning Strategies - Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things. Coordination - Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions. Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others. Abilities: Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem. Ability to work efficiently in a team-oriented environment. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate professionally; both orally and in writing a service-orientated approach, sometimes in stressful circumstances. Ability to maintain composure, keep emotions in check, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations and to empathize with others and understand their perspective. Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events). Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
