About the Town of South Hill: South Hill is located just a few miles north of Lake Gaston and about 20 minutes east of Buggs Island Lake situated halfway between the capital cities of Richmond and Raleigh with both being approximately an hour away. Why South Hill Police Department? The South Hill Police Department (SHPD) has undergone a major upgrade to equipment and infrastructure over the past several years. Our department recently became an accredited agency with VLEPSC. We provide services to a town of approximately 5000 residents and see thousands of visitors each week from our two exits off of interstate 85 and from US 58. We offer a starting salary of $46,000 per year for certified officers. We offer negotiated salaries depending on years of service and qualification for Virginia road certified law enforcement officers. Our field officers work twelve-hour shifts with every other weekend off. We have opportunities for overtime work, and court overtime. We offer excellent benefits to include Health, Dental, Vision, Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays and a retirement program through Virginia Retirement System with hazardous duty benefits paid. Officers are provided uniforms, and equipment is furnished both during initial training and on the job, and are assigned cars to take home within 35 road miles of the town limits.
